Elgi turns up the pressure with new stabilizer technology to power global growth

Elgiโs stabilizer technology technology could potentially save up to 19 trillion units of electricity if implemented across all compressors worldwide
Elgi Equipments Ltd, a leading Indian air compressor manufacturer with a strong global presence, has introduced what it calls a revolutionary stabilizer technology for industrial air compressors. This breakthrough innovation eliminates pressure fluctuations, enhances reliability, and offers up to 15 per cent energy savings, positioning Elgi at the forefront of technological advancements in the global air compressor market.
Currently ranked sixth in the global air compressor market, Elgi has set its sights on breaking into the top three by 2035-36. The new stabilizer system directly competes with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)โa more expensive alternative offered by competitors. Unlike VFDs, which dynamically adjust compressor speed but introduce instability and failure risks, Elgiโs stabilizer system provides a failsafe solution, ensuring that even in the event of a malfunction, the compressor continues running smoothly without disruption.
โThis is an industry-first technology,โ said Jairam Varadaraj, Managing Director of Elgi Equipments Ltd. โA patent search confirmed that the only similar invention was our own previous patent. This system enables variable flow at a constant speed, eliminating frequent start-stop cycles that cause wear and tear, thereby extending compressor lifespan.
Elgiโs stabilizer technology technology could potentially save up to 19 trillion units of electricity if implemented across all compressors worldwide.
Despite its massive energy-saving potential, the cost to customers remains minimal, making it an attractive alternative to VFDs. โCompared to a VFD-equipped compressor, our stabilizer system reduces costs by 30 per cent , while ensuring higher reliability,โ added Varadaraj.
Some early adopters have already reported significant savings. A 45-kilowatt machine user confirmed that the stabilizer system helped them save โน3.86 lakh within six months. โThis level of energy savings means the entire machine pays for itself in just two years,โ said Venu Madhav, Director Technology, Elgi Equipments Ltd.
The stabilizer system is compatible with all rotary screw compressors and, with modifications, can be adapted for positive displacement compressors. Given that screw compressors make up 85-90 per cent of the global market, this covers a majority of industrial applications. For existing compressors (of Elgi and competition), the company offers two retrofitting options.
โOur strategy has always been to deliver cutting-edge innovation, not just low-cost products,โ said Varadaraj. โThis stabilizer system is a milestone in our journey, reinforcing Elgiโs position as a pioneer in air compressor technologyโ
Commercial production
The stabilizer system is now ready for commercial production, with a global rollout planned over the next 6-7 months. It is fully compliant with international standards and will become a standard feature in all future Elgi compressors.
With a long-term goal of reaching $2 billion in revenue by FY35-36, the companyโs immediate milestone is to reach $450 million by FY25-26, with the stabilizer system expected to significantly accelerate this growth trajectory.
With 180 R&D professionals, the company invests 2-3 per cent of revenue annually in research and development. โIf our team were based in Europe, our R&D spend would be 8 per cent of revenueโbut because we operate in India, the cost looks lower. What matters is the depth of innovation and the scale of technological advancement weโre driving,โ he added.
