The Gender Matters of Manufacturing
In the changing manufacturing landscape, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are paramount, driving innovation and growth. True diversity encompasses varied thoughts, values, beliefs, and perspectives, not just gender balance. Women's contributions in manufacturing bridge the gender gap and enrich the sector with diverse viewpoints and innovative solutions, shaping its trajectory.
ELGi's commitment to inclusivity and collaboration underscores equal opportunities, fostering an environment where all thrive regardless of background. Significant strides in gender equality include a gender-neutral hiring policy and zero-tolerance for discrimination. Women now hold diverse roles across operations, sales, marketing, IT, and HR, constituting 18% of ELGi's global and 7% of its Indian workforce.
ELGi's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is exemplified by its introduction of all-women production lines at the ELGi Air Centre. Graduates of the ELGi Vocational Training School (EVTS) manage operations, showcasing the company's dedication to inclusivity, skill development, and empowerment. The EVTS, in collaboration with the Community College, Central University of Tamil Nadu, offers a Bachelor of Vocation (B. Voc) program in Production Technology, blending practical skills and theoretical knowledge crucial for a successful manufacturing career. Additionally, ELGi's partnership with PSGR Krishnammal College for Women establishes the GRG-ELGi Digital Innovation DOJO, integrating digital transformation strategies with DEI. This initiative enables young women to acquire specialized technical skills, devise solutions, and gain valuable industry experience, bolstering the education-to- work pipeline.
As ELGi aims to achieve 20% women representation in its workforce, it underscores a broader ambition within the manufacturing sector to embrace diversity. This journey towards inclusivity and progress is a testament to the transformative power of diversity, proving that when every voice is amplified, every opinion valued, and every individual respected, the sector is better equipped to navigate the challenges of today and innovate for the future.
As it moves forward, breaking down barriers and upending stereotypes, the manufacturing industry will witness a transformative future - one where diversity is not merely applauded; it is the foundational element fuelling innovation and growth.
